Our wellbeing and mental health are so important. Having the tools to help navigate the world and self-regulate can make a difference in our lives.

Sometimes it can start through anxiety and panic attacks. It can you thinking, it's a one-time thing, but it's not. I can cause long term effects such as depression, eating disorders and anxiety. I have anxiety and panic attacks, but I have found methods that can help with these emotions and how often the attacks occur - techniques like the colour method, count to 10, breathing exercises, grounding and talking to friends.

The Colour Method

Look for a colour and count 10 things that are that colour. For example, you're in class and you've chosen the colour blue. Look for blue things, like the door, chairs, pens and so on, until you get to 10. You'll find that you may feel much calmer and able to carry on.

Count to 10

In your head, count to 10. As you count, breath deeply and slowly. Repeat as many times as you need until your heart rate slows down.

Breathing Techniques

Focusing on your breathing can really help you to regulate. Breathe in and count to 6, then breathe out can count to 6. Blow the air out like you're blowing through a straw. Repeat as many times as needed.

Grounding

Focusing on using your senses - Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can smell, 2 things you can hear and 1 thing you can taste. This is another way to help you feel present in the room and better able to regulate.

You can also make a calming playlist or soundtrack and listen to it, talk to your friends, or even meditate. There are doctors and therapy, which are both great sources of help, but you can also use these methods to help you regulate and feel better.
